Die Auszeichnung ist heuer mit zwölf Millionen Schwedischen Kronen (1,06 Mio. Euro) dotiert. Übergeben wird der Preis traditionell am 10. Dezember, dem Todestag des Stifters Alfred Nobel. Im vergangenen Jahr teilten sich die Auszeichnung der Japaner Susumu Kitagawa, der in Australien tätige Brite Richard Robson und der in den USA tätige, gebürtige Jordanier Omar M. Yaghi für die "Entwicklung metallorganischer Gerüstverbindungen" und damit einer neuartigen Molekülarchitektur, sogenannte MOFs.
